CARE + SAFETY
CANDLE CARE + SAFETY
- Burn for at least 3-4 hours to ensure the wax melts evenly and prevents tunneling. Especially the first time burning it.
- Burn your candle for no longer than 4 hours at a time.
- Keep the wick trimmed to 0.25 inches before lighting to avoid excessive flame height, smoke, or soot.
- Allow the wax to fully solidify before burning again.
- Do not move or touch the outside of your candle vessel when in use. The metal will be very hot during and shortly after burning.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended. Always be sure it is in sight when being used and is extinguished if you are leaving the room or going to sleep.
- If available, use a snuffer to extinguish your candle, to prevent wax from splattering.
- DO NOT extinguish candle with the lid.
- After you extinguish your candle, make sure it is completely out and there is no glow coming from the wick.
- Burn candles away from flammable items; curtains, bedding, carpets, etc.
- Burn candles on a level, heat-resistant surface.
- Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.
- Keep candles free from foreign materials and wick trimmings.
- Stop burning your candle when there is approximately 0.25 inches of wax left.
OPENING YOUR CANDLE
Each 7 oz & 13 oz candle order comes with a custom 3D printed opener key - limit 1 per shipment. While durable, they still require a gentle touch, so please handle with care to avoid breakage. Pro-tip: go around the perimeter of the lid and lever from a few points to loosen it! If your opener breaks/bends or gets lost, a flathead screwdriver works too! DO NOT USE KNIVES, SHARP TOOLS, OR FINGERNAILS (OUCH!!!) TO OPEN THE CAN!
SOOT, LET'S TALK ABOUT IT
Ah, soot—it’s the uninvited guest no one asked for, but sometimes shows up anyway. The good news? It’s totally manageable!
Why does soot happen?
Soot is a natural byproduct of combustion, and even the cleanest-burning candles can produce a little now and then. It usually pops up when a candle’s flame isn’t burning properly—think too much oxygen, a wick that’s too long, or drafts messing with the flame’s groove.
How can I prevent soot?
Here’s the secret to keeping soot at bay:
- Trim your wick. Always keep your wick at about 1/4" long before lighting. A long wick equals a taller flame, which equals more soot.
- Burn wisely. Place your candle in a draft-free spot. Breezy flames dance around and lead to incomplete burning (aka soot).
- Don’t overdo it. Burning your candle for more than 4 hours at a time can cause the wax to overheat, leading to—you guessed it—soot.
What if it still happens?
Don’t panic! A little soot on the jar is easy to clean with a damp cloth or a touch of rubbing alcohol. If it’s on your walls or surfaces, a mild soap and water solution should do the trick, and be sure to follow all care tips.
NOTES:
1. Trim Smart: While we recommend trimming your wick to about 1/4" before each burn, you can experiment with trimming it slightly shorter—closer to 3/16"—to keep the flame steady and soot minimal if you notice you are still struggling with soot. Just don't go too short, or your candle might struggle to stay lit!
2. Paint Can Quirks: Our signature paint can vessels are designed for charm, but their slightly tapered tops can sometimes hold onto a bit of soot. Rest assured, this doesn’t affect the quality of your burn—it’s just the nature of the can. If you notice buildup, a quick wipe with a damp cloth will keep your can looking fresh.
Candles are meant to set the vibe, not ruin it. Follow these tips, and you’ll enjoy a soot-free glow!

CANDLE TROUBLESHOOTING
HOW DO I PREVENT MY CANDLE FROM TUNNELING?
We want your candle to burn evenly and last as long as possible. To prevent tunneling in your candle, make sure to burn it until the entire top layer has melted into liquid wax. If you extinguish the flame before its optimal burn time, the leftover wax can create a tunnel around the outside, which can impede the candle's maximum burn potential and make it challenging to light in the future.
MY CANDLE IS TUNNELING! WHAT DO I DO NOW?
No need to worry! If the candle has started to tunnel, there's a simple solution. Just wrap the sides and top of the vessel with foil and create a small hole to light the wick. This will create a mini-oven for the edges to melt down. It's important to remember that during the first burn, the candle should be left lit until all the wax has melted to the edge. This will create a memory ring for the next time you light it, ensuring future burns will go smoothly.
WHAT IS "MUSHROOMING"? AND IS MY CANDLE OKAY?
Candle mushrooming is a common issue that occurs when a candle wick takes on a mushroom-like shape after burning. It happens when the wick absorbs excess wax because the flame can't burn it fast enough, which causes a buildup of carbon particles.
While mushrooming can be unsightly, it usually doesn't affect the candle's burn quality or safety. However, if the carbon falls into the melt pool, it can create an unpleasant odor. To fix a mushrooming wick, you can try trimming the black cap and straightening the wick. You can also try bending the wick slightly so it's in the right position before lighting the candle.
